Growing up, I had a real affinity for root beer because it was my dad’s favorite soft drink. One of my favorite things from childhood was always pouring root beer into a tall, frosty mug on the weekends(with maybe a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream). I wanted to share this minimal, super easy one hour root beer recipe for beginners as a little summer treat you can make with the little ones. I do want to point out that this by no means makes root beer for the connoisseurs out there—this recipe is meant to be instead a delicious treat that is quick and easy to make with your family. Try your hand at it and enjoy!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • 2 liters of carbonated water
  • 2 cups of water
  • 3 cups of white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of root beer extract
  • 1 gallon growler

Boil the (flat) water in a small pot, adding in the root beer extract and white sugar after the water has been brought to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and continue stirring thoroughly until the sugar has dissolved. Set aside to cool for 20 minutes.

After the mixture has cooled, pour into the growler, adding in the carbonated water. Place in the refrigerator until chilled, then serve in a frosty mug with some ice cubes!
